The CFR Project began on an evening in March 2019, when four of our members delivered impassioned monologues before an audience of over two hundred about the state of our planet. Ved was a budding climate activist, Bhavye loved math and technology as dearly as he does, Abiya had a keen sense of justice and a love of art, and Rayna had just begun her career as an author. The monologues kick-started a six-month effort to reduce the carbon footprint of our school.
We ran into many roadblocks, starting with having to use Google Hangouts to communicate and escalating to the inability to leave home due to the Coronavirus. Although this was frustrating, we quickly realized that we needed to re-evaluate the goals of the project and take it in a new direction. After a hiatus of 4 months, we reformed CFR to focus on personal carbon footprint rather than that of institutions. The first outcome of this renewed goal was the first CFR Calculator.
The Calculator has grown and morphed over the many months we have been working on it, and expanded to include the Model House, a way for individuals to reduce their carbon footprint in their own homes, and the Gameshow, Getting Played, a way for us to share our discoveries in an interactive way. We now have 16 active members from ages 11-16 and have presented at Protect Our Planet's (POP) Youth Festival and the UN's Pre-COP26 Milan.
